History of Ketnar.org

Fifteen years in ten minutes

The name [KETNAR] started quite a ways back as a fiction story and role-play character that Hudson cooked up back in 1990 for fun, originally created for his own idle amusement. A pawn in his ever growing universe of imagination, which was soon to be altered forever by the coming of a one of a kind show known as [gargoyles] (Now also hosted by ketnar.org). At which point KETNAR as a pastime was put on hold, but not for long..

KETNAR was soon reborn, He was made Stronger, Faster,Better. He was given 200 times more ass to kick and all the firepower he needed to do it. All that, and a pack of smokes. KETNAR was now a genetically designed weapons project of some government agency. Lacking basic emotions, and having been programmed to seek and destroy, he was turned from a simple gargoyles genetic study, into a weapon of mass destruction. And then he got away.

KETNAR struggled with feelings he could never have, and things he could never understand. A character of untold strength and ability, thwarted by something as simple as an inability to feel the things everybody else does. Clawing away at the shroud known as life to find where he belonged. To find a purpose.

And yet somehow, he still gets all the girls. <Grin> KETNAR had become Hudson's most catchy character, having quite a bit of a fan-base following the character and storyline from many of Hudson's online friends, and even people Hudson didn't know. Something about KETNAR just had great appeal to people, either for simple action and adventure, or for the characters anti-emotional turbulence, or for its philosophical look at life - what are we without ourselves, without our emotions? Could a man made into a killing machine find the man he should have been? Would he ever discover what the real purpose of the K.E.T.N.A.R project was before it was overthrown? Would he find a greater purpose, a reason to go on, or would he find that his existence was too futile?

KETNAR became a sort of alter ego in games, the ultimate of ultimate's, the cream of all crops. The man of every hour. The...well, you get the idea. First it started with [QUAKE] one, and then moved onto [QuakeWorld], where Hudson was first introduced to the world of true online gaming. No null modem cables here, this was real in-your-face kill-or-be-killed smack-em-down and sort-em-later action, this wasn't no Mario boys and girls. 'KETNAR' had found home.

This led to the creation of [KqC], KETNAR quake Clan. Which was great fun while it lasted, but others had collage, Hudson had work and school, and over time, the fun ended. At least in a literal gaming-clan sense.

The idea of KqC lived on however, in a sort of alter-reality online story, a fantasy realm where the character of KETNAR lived on his life, his clan branching out into other realms, and beginning a silent, if not dominating takeover of the world.

At 'this time' in the ever going online saga of KETNAR, his clan is worldwide, a multinational corporation of military like forces, high technology, research and development, and a veritable monopoly on all things important. Most of it is all under the table, but some aspects of the KqC are publicly known.

But through it all, real or not, one thing remained the same. KETNAR as a person or just a word, stood for the ultimate, the powerful, the undeniable truth that one of many can rise above the rest despite his or her own limitations, and that everybody has a chance to make it big.

At some point near the year 2000, [Hudson] was hired by [Chris Rogers], Chris and Hudson met through the gargoyles online fandom, and have been close working partners ever since. At some point just before the dot-bomb hit the US economy, Hudson got the idea of starting up a small hosting company. When he was asked what he would call this new company, The first thing to come to mind only seemed logical for the group of people wanting to be involved, KETNAR and the KqC seemed perfect. And the names have stuck like glue since then.

And that brings us to right now. [ketnar.com] is KETNAR's own corporate web site, and we have plans to re-vitalize the web site in the future as a interactive fictional corporate site based around the KqC global operations, a place where users can poke around and 'hack in' to find its hidden secrets, almost a sort of online game.

And [Ketnar.org] is a public service provided by the corporation, one of those few 'publicly known' services run by the KqC.

Lest we forget the recently unleashed [Games.ketnar.net], after all, where would KETNAR be today if it were not for the games?

And last but not least, we have [Servercave.com], the little known 'other half' of the close working alliance between Hudson and Chris which does advanced hosting, server colocation, manned administration and much much more than can be detailed on this little blurb, but KETNAR happens to be the mascot.
Don't Get it? Gargoyle, lives in a cave. So where does a gargoyle network live? In a Server cave! Well, we thought it was funny, and 'servercave' has a nice ring to it.

The bottom line is that KETNAR has a weird sort of meaning for us now. It, or he, is more than just a fictional character,or even a simple mascot, KETNAR has become a symbol of accomplishing great things, even in the face of uncertainty or of those who would rather see otherwise.

Okay, yeah, its crazy, but its all in the name of prosperity. You get killer hosting, and we have fun running it, what's so crazy about that?
