News: Upgrades complete!
Posted by Hudson Sunday, 09 January 2005 (17:36:13) EST

The upgrades are now complete, and this also fixes that damn chronic server reboot problem that developed around near years.
Due to the long duration that this problem was effecting our users, we are granting a free months credit on the next billing cycle. We are deeply sorry for the problems this may have cuased anybody over new years.
The backup system worked just fine, and kept data loss to an utter minimum of only a few minuts worth of time. This has also promted us to enact plans of new failover capabilities on our hosting platforms, so such problems won't be so show-stopping if they ever arise again, and thus will also enable us to continue service /through/ our longer matanince windows without having to interupt service.

News: About all that nonsense.
Posted by Hudson Wednesday, 22 December 2004 (06:43:31) EST

As some people might have noticed, service on the servers was a little..off,yesterday.
Blame apache, it's all their fualt. We upgraded php and apache to deal with some potential flaws in the system, the upgrade cuased a few bumps in the road, but now things should be back in order. And then we had a freak system reboot that we are still investigating.
Furthermore, anybody running phpbb boards (have a forum? its /probably/ phpbb..) needs to UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE ASAP/STAT/RIGHT NOW, there is a VERY SERIOUS flaw in it which could greatly impact your website. We have sent out an email notice to all aplicable users, but just in case you missed the mail, here is a notice. If you need help, drop an email on the admins and let us know, we are glad to help.
Furthermore, we are going to bring the new startup system into the picture soon, so if you have any programs that need to run all the time, they will start automaticly if the server should happen to go down and need to restart. (A rare thing, but nonetheless problematic when getting eveyrthing started back up manualy.), this includes mucks, muds, bots, streams, whatever.
As always, any questions can be sent to the admins.

News: New spam filtering.
Posted by Hudson Wednesday, 21 July 2004 (04:30:09) EDT

We have activated the new spam countermeasures, this time after much tweaking and testing, to combat the whole 'delete eveyrthing under the sun' problem we had before.
We have activated this feature on the @ketnar.org email adresses only first, for final testing. If all goes well, we will bring it online for the rest of the domains we host.
Please! If you have a @ketnar.org email address and notice /any/ problems with mail now, let us know ASAP! Thanks!
Several people have asked, so: Yes, this also includes viri scanning of emails for harmful attachments. This means no more worms. (not that we had a big problem with that, but now we never will..
further details will be added to the website about the filtering that we use, and soon, we will have a system to which users can help automaticly sharpen the filters by reporting spam that manages to 'slip through'.

News: Boo!

Yes, yes, we are all still here. nothing has really ..well, happened. Just business
as usual around the cave.
We have refreshed the certs on the mail server, some people might have a problem
getting mail at first.
If you are one such person, please try deleting old security cert's from your
mail client so that it will refresh to the new ones.
PS: Everybody give a great big congrats to Knoxville, who is now officially our
offsite NOC operations monkey, and of course, on payroll. Way to go Knox!

News: Server move in progress.
Posted by Hudson Sunday, 09 May 2004 (03:50:19) EDT

We have made the jump into the new Ketnar server(s)! The move wasn't 'flawless', but we nailed the heavy problems quickly, and are now in the 'tweak and optimize' stage of things.
If you notice anything 'strange' going on, or broken, or otherwise not working as it used to. Please wait till after MONDAY to report it, if the problem persists beyond then, we might have missed something.
More info about this new hardware will be posted later.
Thanks!

News: Ketnar.org unwittingly attacked by horny ISP.
Posted by Hudson Saturday, 17 April 2004 (22:04:56) EDT

Sometime, in the wee hours of this morning, a lonely, horny , perhaps somewhat perverse chinaman found one of our customer websites.
So enlightened by the sexual delights found within, that he felt the need to share this link with his ENTIRE ISP (about 5000 people) through some sort of link-swapping system.
One stroaker turned into ten, ten into a hundred, and from there..
Well, lets just say I hope they have lots of moist towelttes. We had to block the entire ISP due to the fact they were choking the entire server to death. (And thats pretty damn hard to do! Never underestimate the power of porn, people.)
For those who are curious, you can check out the ISP's website here.
Thats all from me now - I'm going to go back to laughing my ass off about this one.
Updates:
Somebody pointed out that the website is most likly Taiwan, not China.
And by this point, we have blocked enough VERY LARGE IP subnets to probably block a large portion of the Taiwan country.
for those of you who speak IP, here is an idea of how big the traffic was.
61.228.0.0/14 218.160.0.0/12 61.216.0.0/12

News: Slight provider problem.
Posted by Hudson Friday, 12 March 2004 (02:35:00) EST

Our primary provider is doing some systems work. The end result is people being unable to reach the servers, and routs being in a state of flux for the time being. The current time is 3:35 AM eastern time, and the work window is valid until 7 AM. While we doubt this rough spot will last that long, do not be alarmed if you have problems reaching any of the servers or games we host during this outage window.
Sorry we were unable to give notice of this before hand, we were not alerted ahead of time that this would be happening. (And thus we will be inserting many feet into many backsides.)
